Como es de esperar de Medina esta exposición de obras nuevas nos presenta una gama de sorpresas y mundos misteriosos.

El atractivo del su trabajo se encuentra en la sinceridad con la cual Medina permite que sus ideas tengan su propio rumbo.  Los personajes que habitan en sus cuadros le llevan hacía nuevos territorios donde la paradoja reina y la percepción juguetea según sus propias reglas.

De la misma manera que Medina construye sus cuadros, de múltiples capas, cada obra parece una secuencia de ideas efímeras, escondidas pero no olvidadas:  un reciclaje de materiales, texturas e ideas que nunca se acaban.

Su mundo es a la vez fantástico y real, naif y sabio.  Su maestría de la composición y su pícaro ritmo dan vida a su trabajo.  Su buen ojo de artista, siempre inquisitivo, penetra en la profundidad de todo lo que observa.

Medina explora lo onírico pero igualmente le da al realismo una precisión impresionante y sensible.  Esta exposición además brinda una vista privilegiada de  algunos de sus paisajes atmosféricos.

Galeria La Rampa welcomes back Cádiz artist Jose Manuel Medina Tamayo, recent winner of the prestigious Cadiz Carnival poster 2010. As we have come to expect from Medina this exhibition of new work holds a host of  surprises and mysterious worlds. The appeal of Medina‘s work is the sincerity with which he allows his ideas to have their own life – he creates canny characters who lead him into territories where paradox reigns and perception plays by its own rules. In the same way in which his paintings are constructed, layer upon layer, each work is a sequence of fleeting, part-hidden but not forgotten, ideas:  a never ending recycling of materials, textures and ideas.

His world is at the same time fantastical and real, naïve and wise.  His mastery of composition and playful rhythm brings the work alive. His artist’s enquiring eye penetrates deep into the complexity of all that he observes.

Medina explores the surreal but equally he renders realism with awesome precision and sensitivity.  This exhibition also offers a rare viewing of some of his atmospheric landscapes.

Este verano Galería La Rampa reúne seis artistas con sus contribruciones personales al mundo del arte naif.

Con sus impresionantes biografías este diverso grupo a menudo premiado nos ofrece todo el espectro temático y estilístico de este género de pintura; temáticas relacionadas con la vida campesina, la vida familiar, las tradiciones y la religión, representadas siempre con una gran imaginación y vivacidad.  Fiel a los conceptos originales de Arte Naif cada obra está ligada a la búsqueda de la aparente sencillez para brindar así una visión del mundo sincera y exenta de artificios.

A veces parecen caprichosas y a menudo surrealistas estas composiciones coloridas y optimísticas que se caracterizan además por su ingenio y pintura detallista y minuciosa.

Es una perspectiva infantil de una existencia ajena a cualquier tipo de contaminación externa. Pero muy lejos de ser soso o inverosimil  la obra es un estimulante reflejo de lo nos rodea todos los días y está realizado con pasión, un toque de ironía y todo el encanto de un rechazo infantil a la formalidad.

With impressive biographies garlanded with awards this diverse group offer us the full spectrum of themes and styles associated with this genre of painting; ranging from playful country scenes and family outings to cultural tradition and religion.  And true to the original concepts of ‘naïve’ each work strives for a directness and simplicity that offers a vision of the world devoid of artificiality.

At times whimsical, and often surreal, these colourful, optimistic compositions are also characterised by their meticulous attention to detail.

It’s a childlike perception of an existence apparently uncontaminated by external factors.  But far from being dull or far-fetched, the work is a refreshing take on what is often all too familiar and it is executed with wit, colour and the charm of an infantile attitude to formality.

El viernes 12 de junio se inauguro en “Los Balcones del Califa”  una exposición de pintura y dibujos de la pintora alemana Uta Geub.

Sanluqueña de adopción y atrapada por la luz del Sur, Uta se inspira en lo mejor del pictórico de las tradiciones y costumbres andaluces.  A traves su prisma innovadora ella transforma el colorido local en un caleidoscopio, donde luz y sombra juegan; un mosaico confeccionado de fragmentos de cristal colorado.

Los cuadros se componen una iconografia entendible e idenficable : caballos en las carreras, un jinete a caballo, romerias, ferias; algunos pilares familiares de la cultura andaluz.  Desde allí ha fusionado estas tradiciones irradicables con el concepto pop y las estructuras cubistas en su propia interpretación de todo lo que se celebra a su alrededor, sobretodo donde se implica del mundo ecuestre.

Ella lo ha reflejado con su estilo propio, lleno de colorido y con una tecnica muy personal que comienza con un punto de lápiz en el papel y desde él va dibujando todos los personajes a la vez.

Sus bocetos demonstran como, en una solo trazo a lápiz aparece un jinete en caballo, quijote o sancho en su burro, un pase taurino, un ganadero; hombre y bestia enlazado por todos lados.

From her adopted town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda Uta has made her name as a painter with considerable acclaim and several prestigious commissions to her credit.

Uta’s distinctive painting style is notable for its vibrant colours, fluent line and dynamic innovation. She transforms all manner of local pageantry into a veritable kaleidoscope of colour and image. She plays with perspective and form, light and shade from which the subjects her paintings emerge as if embedded in a mosaic of coloured glass.

Uta’s paintings are full of local iconography:

the famous horseraces along Sanlúcar beaches, romerías and ferias – the backbone of Andalucian culture.  She mixes these traditional images with Pop and Cubist structures to make her mark on the full spectrum of celebration that surrounds her, above all within the equestrian world.

Uta’s sketches demonstrate how,  from a unique starting point she traces the entire composition in a one unbroken line.  Out of this complex web of lines emerges the image of a mounted jockey, Quijote or Sancho with their donkey,  a pass in the bullring or a cowboy out with the herd; 

man and beast bound together by a single trace.

The mystical pull of the shores of Andalucia is as powerful as its undertow and awesome currents.  It draws all of us  .. whether in search of tranquility, comfort,  prosperity or utopian lifestyles.  We arrive from north and south driven by  simple desires and shared dreams.  Blanca Orozco pieces together the scraps of our common ambition in her evocative collages of shores, white villages and distant vistas.

Esta exposición resulta de la elección, según mis propios criterios estéticos, de quizás tan sólo una cuarta parte de mis “combates” diarios.  Un reflejo, supongo de mis preocupaciones técnicas y emocionales, y sobre todo de la necesidad de alcanzar esa paz interior, ese silencio .

Mi primer empeño es conseguir el equilibrio en cada una de las piezas; primero, casi de manera impulsiva; probando , quitando , arañando,…hasta llegar a ese ensamble de fuerza y tranquilidad, de impulso y de razón.

Junto a esa resolución de problemas, cierta intención de que parezcan inacabados,  que es lo que, para mi hace que sigan vivos

AMANI es también, cómo no, un grito en contra de cualquier guerra ; ninguna defiende la paz .

Searching for authenticity

“Making a living from painting as a woman in Algeciras is very tough. They ought to raise a monument to us!” laughs Blanca Orozco Sambucety. It’s all the tougher if, like her, you refuse to rehash the saleable so you can press on with your “search for authenticity”.

When we caught up with her in the Tetería of the Hotel del Califa in Vejer de la Frontera, she was hanging her pictures of damaged African faces (the Amani series) and of local townscapes, enthused and happy to have found “a gallery owner who really likes art”. After 10 years working in a very white and often playful form of semi-abstract lyricism, her search has taken her towards a darker, more enagaged use of imagery.

Where has the change in your painting come from?

Listen, I didn’t make it happen. It wasn’t a conscious decision to paint something politically committed or to go back to figurative imagery. It just happened. I’ve gone back to painting the human figure because I needed to use facial expressions to say what I wanted – and at the same time the moment arrived too to create something that was a bit more engaged and critical.

In Algeciras we’re 14 kilometres from Africa and every day people are dying trying to cross over. It’s always seemed to me that Africa has been badly treated. I find it incredible that we’re still shutting doors to them when all they want is to come and live here and eat. We’ve all got a duty towards Africa. Us artists too have a moral obligation to criticise things.

But the paintings here aren’t preachy or propaganda.

I don’t like spelling things out. I like people to imagine things, to sense what’s going on in my work. That’s the nicest thing in art. I want people to interpret for themselves what they see. Having said that, you’ve got to give them some clues. I think you can sense from those faces, for example, that I’m talking about people who are wounded and badly treated. When someone stops in front of a painting, sees a facial expression and asks ‘what is this telling me?”, then that’s a success.

I get the impression from your pictures that you have fun painting. Is that true?

I’m pleased you say so, because whenever I go to an exhibition it’s the first thing I notice. For me it’s basic. Any art has to have that element of play and experimentation. In my studio I’ve got sacks where I keep bits of paper that have grabbed my attention, plaster bandages, cardboard boxes, sacks and bits of cloth…and when I’m working I slap them on, paint on them, rip them off, stick them back on…with no hint of fear. You get incredible results from being random. Lucio Muñoz, an artist who I really like, said that “painting is a battle in which anything can happen.” And so it is.

And where does the word Amani come from?

In Swahili it means peace, in Arabic desires or aspirations. I like the way it sounds. It’s a really broad term that encompasses loads of things, and for me, brings them all together: we’re not at peace with ourselves. It never ceases to amaze me that at a national and personal level we’re still fighting each other and repeating the same nonsense. I’ve just got back from a trip to Berlin – and what they did to the Jews there is really what we’re doing to the Africans here. We’ve shut the doors to Europe. We’ve put up a wall – and we’re in the 21^st century! I think it’s terrible. We need Amani throughout the world! Peace!

La búsqueda del auténtico

“Ser mujer y pintora en Algeciras y vivir de eso es súper-complicado – es para que nos pongan un monumento”, dice Blanca Orozco Sambucety (Algeciras 1976). Más complicado todavía si, como ella, te niegas a repetir lo vendible para seguir con tu “búsqueda del auténtico”.

La encontramos en la tetería del Hotel del Califa en Vejer, colgando sus cuadros de rostros africanos dañados (la serie ‘Amani’) y de paisajes vejeriegos, entusiasmada y contenta de haberse encontrado con “una galerista a quien realmente le gusta el arte”.  Después de 10 años con una lírica semi-abstracta, muy blanca y a veces juguetona, su búsqueda le ha llevado a una figuración más oscura, más comprometida.

¿De dónde ha salido ese cambio?

Mira, no lo he hecho forzado, en plan de ‘voy a hacer una obra comprometida o voy a volver a la figuración’, sino que ha llegado el momento. He vuelto a retomar la figura humana por una necesidad de contar algo a través de la expresión humana.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Y ha llegado el momento también de hacer algo en el que pongo un puntito de compromiso y de crítica.

En Algeciras estamos a 14 kilómetros de África y todos los días hay gente que se muere intentando cruzar. África siempre me ha parecido maltratada históricamente, y me parece increíble que aun hoy sigamos cerrándoles las puertas cuando lo que quieren es venir a comer y a vivir. Todos tenemos un deber con África.  Los artistas también tenemos una obligación moral de criticar las cosas.

Pero tampoco son cuadros didácticos o propagandistas.

No me gusta contarlo descaradamente, me gusta que la gente imagine cosas, que intuya por donde van las cosas, que es lo mas bonito en el arte. Quiero que cada uno lea lo que vea. Dicho eso, algunas pistas sí le tienes que dar. Creo que en esas caras se intuye que estoy hablando de rostros heridos, maltratados. El éxito es en que una persona se para delante de un cuadro, ve una cara con un gesto y se pregunta ‘¿para mí qué está contando esto?’

Por el resultado, parece que te diviertes pintando. ¿Es así?

Me alegro de que lo digas, porque cuando voy a una exposición es de lo primero en que me fijo. Para mí es básico. El arte tiene que tener una parte lúdica y de experimentación. En mi estudio tengo unas bolsas grandes donde guardo papeles que me han llamado la atención, vendas escayolas, cartones, sacos y telas…y voy poniendo, pintando, arrancando, pegando de nuevo…sin miedo. Del azar salen cosas increíbles. Lucio Munoz, un artista que me gusta mucho, dice que “la pintura es un combate donde puede pasar de todo.”  Y así es.

Y la palabra Amani ¿de dónde viene?

En Swahili significa paz, y en Árabe deseos o aspiraciones. Me gusta mucho como suena. Es un término muy amplio que abarca muchas cosas y, para mí, sintetiza todo. No estamos en paz con nosotros mismos. Siempre me flipa que los países sigan y las personas sigamos peleándonos con los otros y sigamos repitiendo las mismas estupideces. Vengo de viaje de Berlín y lo que hicieron a los judíos allí, en realidad lo seguimos haciendo aquí a los africanos. Las puertas de Europa se las hemos cerrado. Hemos puesto un muro y estamos en el siglo veintiuno. Me parecen tremendas esas cosas. ¡Que hubiera Amani en todo el mundo! ¡Paz!

With an assured boldness Alejandro’s paintings capture the unique energy of a moment and draw the viewer into the very heart of his images. He paints familiar everyday urban scenes, where the light is everything: dark shadows, deep colour and silhouette. Here nothing is static; the image flows on, around the corner and out of the frame. The wind blows, people keep walking;  even silence and emptiness would seem to have its own uncanny dynamic.

As winter approaches, Alejandro gives our eyes a welcome wake up call and reminds us of the sheer splendour and power of southern sunlight.

It’s summer! And as Vejer swelters and snoozes, Marisa Bascuñana reveals the town in its true colours; vibrant, playful and wry. The town comes alive in full technicolour with light bouncing off the walls in vivid shadows; garish pinks, purples, yellows and greens camouflage the whitewashed walls. Townsfolk and tourists mingle, enjoying the spirit and energy of Vejer in the swing of summer.

¡Estamos en verano! Mientras que Vejer se sofoca y echa la siestecita Marisa nos deja al descubierto el pueblo en sus verdederos colores; vibrante, alegre y gracioso. La población se anima en pleno tecnicolor y la luz rebota de los muros con sombres vividos: los rosas, violetas, amarillos y verdes camuflan las murallas blancas.

There’s poetry and romance too in Marisa’s delicate, lyrical study of Vejer’s inimitable ‘molinos’ poised serenely above the hustle and bustle below.

Hay también poesia y romance en su estudio lírico de los inimitables molinos de Vejer, serenos y majestuosos en las alturas del pueblo lejos de la algarabía.

With her skill as a printmaker and sharp wit Marisa also captures some quieter moments of daily life away from the hubbub – pottering in the patio, chatting at the barber and of course, propping up the ubiquitous bar.

Con su maestría como grabadora y su perspicaz sentido del humor Marisa nos destaca algunos aspectos más tranquilos de la vida cotidiano fuera del brullo: haciendo un poco de todo en el patio, charlando en la barbería y por supuesto, en el bar empiniando el codo.

Paco Sanguino’s majestic canvases are meticulously-worked masterpieces of colour and texture.One the one hand, a simple testament to the artist’s passion and sheer enjoyment of the infinite possibilities of pigment and paint.On the other hand, open to infinite interpretations.There is no explicit imagery yet into each one you can find a narrative, if that’s what you seek, or an imaginary landscape, or vast calm emptiness.There is a hint of the baroque and their majesty and magic lie deeply buried … in layer upon layer …..

“En este nuevo trabajo intento influenciarme de las mismas sensaciones de las que me suelo influenciar desde hace años, que son al fin y al cabo, el interior de las cosas y los espacios que las rodean, las cosas cercanas y cotidianas, y los grandes espacios que hay dentro y fuera de ellas.

El oxido gotea muy lentamente y la cal apulgarada entre las comisuras de los muros y los restos de pegamento de algunos papeles que han estado pegados ahí, una eternidad.

En el cielo estelas anaranjadas, y en mis manos el olor a trementina, y mis oídos adivinan el deambular de barcos navegando por el río, que viaja silencioso.

En esa quinta hora, en la que estoy profundamente sumido en mis soledades, surge el ansia de pasear por interiores; Interiores de fuego y de agua, de sombra y de luz, son interiores que están dentro y están fuera.

He salido a pasear, por caminos que están surcados más hacia adentro de lo que yo pensaba, y estoy atrapado en ellos, y me hablan, y me seducen, y me rodean. Son paseos por interiores, que están dentro y que están también fuera.”

“In this new work I try to recapture the sensations that used to influence me years ago, the sensations that are, after all, inside things and the spaces that surround them, things nearby and everyday, as well as the big spaces that lie within and outside them.

The rust flaking very slowly, the cal pressed into cracks in the walls and the scraps of bill posters that have been stuck there for an eternity.In the sky, orange-tinted slipstreams, and in my hands the smell of turpentine, and my ears can make out the wanderings of boats sailing along the river as it flows on silently.

In that fifth hour in which I am deeply submerged in my solitude, the longing to pass into those interiors wells up;interiors of fire and water, of light and shade, interiors that are inside and out.

I’ve gone out to walk, to walk the well-trodden paths that lead deeper than I had thought; and I am trapped in them. They speak to me, and seduce me and surround me.They are the way into interiors, that are inside as well as out.”
